Our Team


Oscar Ruiz Schmidt- Founder/Creative Director
Oscar is a Costa Rican fashion designer and art director based in San José Costa Rica who designs under the label Obra Gris.
 
Awards and Recognition:
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week San José (2015)chosen as the 'Revelation" of the Fashion Week by Acqua Panna & San Pellegrino 
Premio BID12:  Award won at the 2012 Biennal Iberamericano de Diseño in Madrid, Spain for his collection  How Water Shapes Land.  
Oscar received his MA in Fashion Design from Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin in the summer of 2012, he also holds a BA in Graphic Design from the University of Costa Rica.

In 2012 he was appointed as professor at Universidad Véritas in San José where he teaches Fashion Design and Photography. He also runs the zine editorial project Cornucopia Zine. 

In addition to fashion, he has worked as a photography producer and stylist, and cut his teeth through numerous industry internships in Berlin and New York, with fashion labels such as c.neeon and Zac Posen, as well as with stylist Gus Romero and fashion photographer Erez Sabag

 

Our Seamstresses and Tailors:

We support a community of local seamstress' and tailors by out-sourcing production to them.  

Our Interns:

Obra Gris is supported by a number of Interns that we couldn't function without, including:

Barbara (AKA - Barbie) - textile design specialist, a great eye for design, cool textiles and helps create unique pieces with fabric interventions.

Kimberly (AKA - Kimba) -  Multi-dress master, can make one with the UTMOST accuracy in less time than drinking 2 cups of coffee! 

Melissa - master of uncooperative fabrics and an old overlock sewing machine

Mónica (AKA - Moma) - Killer at piping and unbeatable patience at hand stitching
